The European Union (EU) is witnessing a significant expansion in solar photovoltaic (PV) energy as part of its renewable energy transition. By the end of 2024, the total installed PV capacity in the EU is expected to exceed 260 GW, driven by favorable policies, corporate investments, and increasing energy independence strategies.
Source: SolarPower Europe The EU solar generation capacity keeps increasing and reached, according to SolarPower Europe, an estimated 406 GW in 2025. The EU has long been a front-runner in the roll-out of solar energy. Under the European Green Deal and the REPowerEU plan, solar power is a building block of the EU's transition to cleaner energy.
By the end of 2024, the total installed PV capacity in the EU is expected to exceed 260 GW, driven by favorable policies, corporate investments, and increasing energy independence strategies. This report ranks the 27 EU member states based on their total installed solar capacity at the end of 2024 and outlines their expected growth trajectories.
In 2024, 47.5% of the electricity consumed in the EU came from renewables and 23.4% of renewable electricity came from solar energy (Eurostat, January 2026). June 2025 was the first month in history where solar energy was the main source of electricity generated in the EU at 22%. Source: SolarPower Europe

Affordable energy Not only is solar energy clean, but it is also cost-effective. The price of solar PV has dropped significantly in recent years, making it one of the cheapest forms of new
In Q2 2025, renewables powered 54% of EU electricity, with solar leading the mix and topping all sources in June for the first time.
The primary energy source in Poland is coal, but the utilities have cut their coal power output in half in this period. This was largely because of a nearly 2000% increase in solar power
Europe''s solar generation hits new high EU solar power output grew 21.7% (i.e., by 54 terawatt-hours, TWh) in 2024, expanding from 9.3% to 11.1% of total generation – a trend mostly
In the first half of 2025, Germany and many other European countries gener-ated more solar power than ever before. This was offset by lower electricity generation from wind energy.

The EU cumulative PV capacity projections between 2024 and 2028 show double-digit growth rates year-on-year. In absolute terms, the EU is expected to add 401 GW new solar between 2024 and
In 2024, the EU''s solar PV power production stood at over 296 terawatt-hours. In comparison, solar PV generation one year earlier was 248 terawatt hours, which indicates an
Yes, Europe extensively utilizes solar power due to multiple factors, namely 1. abundant sunlight exposure, 2. governmental incentives for renewable energy, 3.
