One of the major environmental issues with solar panels is their production process. The manufacturing of solar cells and other components is resource-intensive, which means it requires significant amounts of energy.
Compared with fossil-based electrical power system, PV solar energy has significantly lower pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. However, PV solar technology are not free of adverse environmental consequences such as biodiversity and habitat loss, climatic effects, resource consumption, and disposal of massive end-of-life PV panels.
This review showed that the major environmental impact is the evolution of hazardous materials during the manufacturing of PV systems.
In addition to replacing hazardous materials, efforts should also focus on improving the energy efficiency of the manufacturing process.
