The marine life on the Alwal Shoal is said to be magnificent, ragged tooth sharks or "raggies" - also known as grey nurse sharks, are regularly spotted between August and November, as they use the Aliwal Shoal Area to mate. Because the Aliwal Shoal marine life is so abundant, not only will you see 15 to 20 sharks at any one time, also mantas, moray eels, stingrays, sweetlips, potato groupers and turtles. At certain times of the year, you may also see dolphins, humpbacks, whale sharks and hammerhead sharks.
Visitors diving the South Coast Aliwal Shoal can expect fine water temperatures year-round, as the shoal lies on the edge of the warm Mozambique current.
